L-Step
- Start Position:
- Stand on the floor facing the long side of a horizontally positioned step platform, near its right end.
- Keep both feet on the floor with sufficient space to step onto the platform and move off its right end.
- Maintain an upright posture and use a stable platform at an appropriate height.
- Description:
- The L-Step is an eight-count step aerobics movement that travels from the front of the platform to one end and then returns to the starting position. The movement uses a step-and-tap pattern, forming an L-shaped path around the platform. It can be performed at either end or incorporated into longer aerobic combinations.
- Sequence:
- Count 1: Step onto the right end of the platform with the left foot.
- Count 2: Bring the right foot onto the platform beside the left foot and lightly tap without transferring weight.
- Count 3: Step sideways off the right end of the platform onto the floor with the right foot.
- Count 4: Bring the left foot down beside the right foot and lightly tap without transferring weight.
- Count 5: Step back onto the right end of the platform with the left foot.
- Count 6: Bring the right foot onto the platform beside the left foot and lightly tap.
- Count 7: Step backward off the platform onto the floor in front of it with the right foot.
- Count 8: Step backward onto the floor with the left foot beside the right foot, returning to the starting position.
- Notes:
- The L-Step may also be performed at the left end of the platform by reversing the footwork and direction of travel.
- Right and left L-Steps can be alternated to create longer aerobic combinations.
- Knee lifts, front kicks or side kicks may be incorporated as variations after participants become comfortable with the basic movement.
- Maintain awareness of the platform edges when stepping sideways off the end.
- Place the entire supporting foot securely on the platform and avoid rushing the changes in direction.
- Precaution: Practice the movement slowly before increasing the tempo. Use a lower platform or simplify the movement if balance or coordination becomes difficult.
- Keep the steps and taps controlled, avoiding excessive twisting of the knees when changing direction.
- For another combination, see the I-Step, which can be alternated with L-Steps to create an L-I-L-I pattern.
