I-Step
- Start Position:
- Stand centered behind a horizontally positioned step platform, facing the platform.
- Begin with the feet comfortably together and maintain an upright posture.
- Use a stable, nonslip platform at a height appropriate for your experience and ability.
- Description:
- The I-Step is an eight-count step aerobics combination consisting of a step-up onto the platform, a jumping jack on the platform, a step-down to the floor and a jumping jack on the floor. The movement can be repeated or combined with other step aerobics patterns.
Precaution: Jumping jacks on an elevated platform require good balance, coordination and sufficient space for safe foot placement. Use a low, stable platform and avoid landing near its edges.
- Sequence:
- Counts 1-2: Step onto the platform with one foot, followed by the other, bringing both feet together near the center.
- Counts 3-4: Perform one jumping jack on the platform, moving the feet apart and then returning them together.
- Counts 5-6: Step backward off the platform, one foot at a time, returning both feet to the floor.
- Counts 7-8: Perform one jumping jack on the floor, moving the feet apart and then returning them together.
- Repeat the sequence as appropriate for the aerobic routine.
- Notes:
- The I-Step can be combined with L-Steps to create a longer aerobic combination.
- Alternating L-Steps and I-Steps creates an L-I-L-I pattern, as suggested by the original contributor.
- Participants should become comfortable with basic stepping movements before attempting jumping jacks on the platform.
- For a lower-impact alternative, perform the jumping jack movement on the floor, or substitute controlled step-outs without jumping.
- Stop or simplify the movement if balance or control becomes difficult.
