Duck Punch Combo

  • Start Position:
    • Begin in a comfortable fighting stance with either the left or right foot leading.
    • Keep the feet comfortably separated, knees relaxed and body weight balanced.
    • Raise both hands into the Defense Position, with the fists near the chin and elbows comfortably bent.
    • Maintain an upright posture with the abdominal muscles gently engaged.
    • Allow sufficient space for backward and forward diagonal travel without approaching other participants or obstacles.
    • Begin at a moderate pace to learn the ducking and punching movements before increasing intensity.
  • Description:
    • Duck Punch Combo is a 32-count cardio kickboxing combination incorporating defensive ducking movements, directional footwork and several punching techniques.
    • The routine begins with two diagonal backward ducks, followed by two high-and-low punching combinations.
    • Participants then move forward through four ducking movements while performing alternating hook punches.
    • After returning to a front-facing fighting stance, the combination finishes with two alternating cross-style punches and two alternating uppercuts.
    • The sequence develops coordination, balance, cardiovascular conditioning and controlled transitions between defensive and offensive movements.
    • Movement depth, travel distance and punching speed should be adjusted to match participant ability.
  • Sequence:
    1. Step 1 - Two Diagonal Backward Ducks: From the fighting stance, take two controlled diagonal backward steps while performing shallow ducking movements. Bend through the hips and knees, keep the spine comfortably aligned and maintain the hands near the Defense Position. Avoid bending sharply forward at the waist.
    2. Step 2 - Two High-and-Low Punch Combinations: Perform two high-and-low punching combinations, directing one controlled punch toward an imaginary upper target and another toward an imaginary lower target. Adjust the punch height by bending the knees and hips slightly rather than rounding the back. Return the hands to guard between punches.
    3. Step 3 - Four Forward Ducks with Alternating Hooks: Move forward using four small, controlled steps. With each step, perform a shallow duck and an alternating hook punch, switching between the right and left arms. Keep the elbows comfortably bent, rotate the torso naturally and avoid excessive twisting of the knees.
    4. Step 4 - Return to Front-Facing Fighting Stance: Reposition the feet to face the front of the exercise area in a balanced fighting stance. Use small steps to change direction rather than twisting on planted feet. Bring both hands back to the Defense Position.
    5. Step 5 - Two Alternating Cross-Style Punches: Perform two controlled straight punches, alternating the right and left arms. Rotate the hips and torso naturally, allowing the feet to pivot as needed. Return each hand to guard before performing the next punch.
    6. Step 6 - Two Alternating Uppercuts: Perform one right and one left uppercut using short, controlled upward punching movements. Keep the elbows bent, wrists aligned and shoulders relaxed. Return to the fighting stance to prepare for the next repetition.
  • Precautions:
    • During ducking movements, bend through the hips and knees while maintaining comfortable spinal alignment. Avoid excessive forward bending or abrupt head movements.
    • Maintain sufficient space during diagonal backward and forward travel, and avoid moving faster than balance permits.
    • During hook and cross punches, allow the feet and hips to rotate naturally without twisting the knees against planted feet.
    • Maintain wrist alignment during punches and avoid snapping or forcefully locking the elbows.
  • Notes:
    • Beginner variation: Practice the ducking footwork without punches, using shallow knee bends until balance and coordination improve.
    • Lower-impact variation: Reduce travel distance, use smaller ducking movements and perform punches at a slower pace.
    • Teaching suggestion: The original routine uses 32 counts. Practice the movement groups separately before combining them, and establish consistent musical timing without rushing the transitions.
